James Howard Kunstler stated in his book Geography to Nowhere, "When every place looks the same- there is no such thing as place any longer."Please share with the group the name of the places where you were born, went to elementary school, went to college, had your first teaching job, and where you live now. In your opinion what is the significance of place?

I was born in Akron, Ohio. I went to elementary school in New Jersey, Illinois, Indiana, and Florida. I went to college at Valdosta State and have remained in Georgia ever since. I had my first teaching job in Muscogee County at Cusseta Road Elementary. I am living in Columbus now. The significance of place helps to mold who you are and how you handle new situations.
I was born in Columbus, Georgia. I attended Gentian Elementary School. I graduated from Columbus State(previous Columbus College). My first teaching job was in Harris County. I now live in Fortson, Georgia. Significance of place, to me, means being formed into the person I am today. Plus, I feel a sense of being- life is full of memories and security.
I was born & raised in Tampa, Florida and graduated from USF.I worked for a year and a half at Tampa Public Library and then got my Master's in Library Science at the University of Hawaii, Manoa. My first school job was in Alta Vista Elementary school in Haines City, Fla. between Bok Tower, Cypress Gardens and Circus World.8 years later, I met and married the handsome prince and moved to Columbus. My first job here was split between Rose Hill and 30th Avenue Elementary (racing the train every day).
Place is where you come from and what you always knew was forever so...until it changes. To this day, a sniff of cigar smoke (Have-a-Tampa) or fresh-baked bread will send my soul home and lift my heart.
I was born in Columbus, Georgia. I am a product of the Muscogee County School District. My college degrees are from universities in Georgia and Alabama. My first teaching and all of my teaching assignments have been in Georgia. I am truly a "Georgia Girl". Place and environment are synonymous and I am and we are truly by-products of our environments.
I was born in Tallahassee, Florida. We move to Columbus when I was five due to my parents divorcing. I attended elementary school in Muscogee and Russell County. I graduated Carver in 1973. I attended Columbus College for one semester then join the Navy. I then attended Old Dominion University for a year. I divorced then moved back home. I got a job in Louisiana and stayed there about three years and moved home again. I attended CVCC in Phenix City and got an Associate Degree in Business Administration. My mother and my son by my first wife died. I decided I would get my teaching degree and started Columbus College (CSU), again. It took me an extra year to graduate due to transfer credits. I graduated and substituted for a time until I landed my present position at the Academic Success Center, where I've been for thirteen years. I got my Masters in School Counseling during this time.
The "Significance of Place" for me is a feeling of home. I've lived in San Diego, California, Norfolk, Virginia and Lake Charles, Louisiana. I made lots of life long friends along the way, bust as Dorthy said "There's no place like home."
I was born in Columbus, Ga. I attend elementary school in Columbus. I went to Talladega College in Talladega, Ala. My first teaching job was with Muscogee County working in a satellite school for the Woodall Program. I am living in Columbus where it will always be home for me. The significant of place helps define who you are. Teaching was not the job I had in mind but the economy was not doing well when I graduated. My circumstances led me back to teaching where i've been for 2o years.
I was born in Honolulu, HI, but grew up in Nanakuli. I went to Nanaikapono Elementary School, located in Nanakuli. I attended University of Hawaii. I substituted for 5 years, until I got my first teaching position at Leilehua High School, in Wahiawa, HI. I am currently living in Columbus, GA. The significance of place gives you a place to call home and helps to mold you, but it doesn't necessarily define who you are as a person. Family, friends, church, life experiences all contribute to that.
